Each day, countin' up the minutes, till I get alone, 'cause I can't stay
In the middle of it all, it's nobody's fault, but I'm
So alone, Never knew how much I didn't know,
Oh, everything is uncharted.
I know I'm getting nowhere, when I only sit and stare like...
I'm going down,
Follow if you want, I won't just hang around,
Like you'll show me where to go,
I'm already out, of foolproof ideas, so don't ask me how
To get started, it's all uncharted.
Jump start my kaleidoscope heart,
Love to watch the colors fade,
They may not make sense,
But they sure as hell made me.
I won't go as a passenger, no
Waiting for the road to be laid
Though I may be going down,
I'm taking flame over burning out
Compare, where you are to where you want to be, and you'll get nowhere
I think if you were to ask any recent graduate or alum about life after college, you would get resoundingly similar responses. I would say that a majority of us found (or still find) post-grad life to be rather difficult. In fact, not only is it difficult, it's incredibly HUMBLING. If you think you've been knocked around a couple of times during college, wait till you see what the real world has in store for you. I didn't think it was possible to suffer from any more self-doubt and insecurity than I did during my first year of college but boy was I wrong. I've come to the realization that for every new phase or chapter of your life, you're always going to start at the bottom. You become a small fish in a big pond and it's never going to be easy trying to work your way up or swim your way to the top. Constant self-evaluation and re-evaluation is necessary for this rite of passage.
Some of us know what we want to do right off the bat, most of us need a little more time to figure it out. Whatever the case may be, we "20-somethings"are confronted with this new reality: there is no such thing as getting an A+ in life, any measurement of success is completely subjective, and more importantly, you are not some innocent bystander whom life happens to unless you choose to be! For once in our lives, we are forced to make decisions that matter because they directly affect us and our futures, which is both a blessing and a curse because we realize, "hey, I'm in control of MY life; no one can tell me what to do anymore" and at the same time, we frantically panic as we are suddenly engulfed with the pressure to "make something of ourselves or perish without having accomplished anything." We then spend an insane amount of time strategizing and contemplating our next move only to become disheartened or discouraged when things don't pan out. What we 20-somethings fail to realize is that life isn't a race and that things aren't always going to go as planned. Life is unpredictable that way. But when you've grown so accustomed to working towards a particular goal to reap a particular reward (getting good grades and participating in extra-curricular activities to get into a good college, taking classes during the summer to graduate on time, taking internships to land a full-time job, etc.), you feel so vulnerable, unprepared, and lost when it comes time to set sail without a map in hand.
Essentially, life after college is uncharted. Even if you do have a specific goal in mind, that goal usually is a product of your own imagination and thought process. No one necessarily implanted that idea into your head (unless you decided to go along with what your parents/significant other/mentor/etc. told you to do). For those of us who have more open-ended ideas and plans, life after college can seem overwhelming. Again, like many things in life, there is no instruction manual for navigating your way through the uncertainty and open-endedness of post-grad life. Believe me, I’ve tried everything from consulting a magic-8 ball or a fortune cookie to begging other people to choose my career path for me. Ultimately, we are never going to completely leave our futures up to fate because deep down inside of us, we know what we are looking for…or at least, we know what we are not looking for and what we don’t want at all. I’m not exactly sure where I’m even going with this blog post but I do want to provide words of comfort and encouragement to my fellow 20-somethings out there. As Corinne Bailey Rae says, “you’re going to find yourselfsomewhere, somehow.” It may not be anywhere near what you originally envisioned yourself to be or do, it may not happen at an ideal time, you may not even realize it’s happening… but I do know that each day you are one step closer to that place where you want to end up, so long as you set your sights on that goal. Your responsibility lies in deciding what it is that you want and taking action to make it happen. Don’t fret, we’re all going to be somebody! Just make sure you become somebody you’re proud of and somebody you love.
Prayers for all those who are making sense of their lives right now and undergoing discernment. May we live our lives according to His will and not our own.
